![]() The answer lies in it being called a 2nd Battle of Tannenberg. If you're not familiar with German or Polish history you might not know of Tannenberg and if you were to look the place up you might be confused why a battle thought on the 200km frontline was named after a village (population 200) when there were literal hundreds of towns and cities more populous and closer to the actual fighting. Name of the battle is quite a fascinating window into the brain rot that is XIX century nationalism. Later on they'd just throw lots of people straight at the enemy in order to win territory, that is why they suffered tremendous losses and eventually tens of thousands of soldiers deserted, wandered the land, plundered and murdered, there was a massive hunger, the czar administration lost control of the land and Lenin walked into that landscape Part of the reason why Russia never really recovered from those early losses in 1914 was that they lost their best, most experienced officers there Russians were not prepared for a massive firepower Germans had and wanted to fight as if it were 1860s, they sent their elite units straight at German machine guns and artillery and were annihilated, it was a slaughter Instead Russia turned out to be many years behind the west, there is a very vivid description of the events in East Prussia in a Polish book "Zostało z Uczty Bogów" "Remains of Gods' Feast" by a Russian officer who participated in that war In recent years the tone has shifted once again to downplaying, disputing the facts about the Katyn Massacre by the Russian Government, even going so far as to threaten the destruction of the Katyn war cemetery in honor of the Polnish victims.īefore 1914 many thought Russia was destined to become the most dominant superpower in Europe due to its sheer size, natural resources and rapid industrial growth and modernization, the British for example were convinced that Russia would become so powerful by 1920s they could successfully carry on two wars against major powers such as Britain simultaneouslyĮven though Russia wasn't done catching up to the west in 1914 many still thought they'd gazump Germany It was not until the end of the Soviet Union that the later was officially admitted instead of being denied. Khatyn Massacre was a crime commited by Nazi Germany in which about 150 Belarusian civilians were murdered.Īfter the war the Soviet Union build major memorials to the Khatyn Massacre in order to distract and confuse from the Katyn Massarcre commited by Soviet forces. Katyn Massacre was a crime commited by the Soviet Union in which over 20,000 Polish military officers and intelligentsia were murdered. Something similar happen with regards to the Katyn Massacre and Khatyn Massacre. It was certainly a major German victory, it just didnt really happened at Tannenberg. ![]() ![]() To "redeem"/distract that defeat from 500 years ago, the battle was named after Tannenberg, despite most of the fighting focusing on the area around Olsztynek/Hohenstein. Partly because of the battle of Grunwald, usually refered to as (first) Battle of Tannenberg. This map is interactive!
